So what's the big deal?
Myers after being drafted in 2008. |
While doing some random surfing of the online sports world, I managed to come across some information in a Bruce McCurdy article on who those 3 draft picks turned out to be and how interesting it is looking back at almost 7 years later. Although quite confusing, the fallout leading up to the draft turned out to be quite interesting.
In what turns out to be quite a confusing situation to track, here is the breakdown of the offer sheet and what became of it:
- To Anaheim: 1st, 2nd, 3rd round picks in 2008. To Edmonton: Dustin Penner
- To Anaheim: 17th, 28th overall picks. To LA: Edmonton's 1st round pick (13th overall)
- To LA: 13th overall and 3rd round pick in 2009. To Buffalo: 12th overall.
I find it so intriguing how all of these players and picks have some sort of relation to the Oilers and how Buffalo and Edmonton were rumored to have been near a deal to send Myers on his way to Edmonton. While many feel Myers is a sub-par defenceman, he has played a large role with the Sabers accounting for 21.5 TOI/60 in 3 seasons as well as accounting for 34.4% of the teams TOI in 3 years. Myers' monstrous 6ft 8in, 227 lb frame only helps his value.
But wait...
This whole ordeal gets even more interesting as Anaheim used the 2nd round pick in the 2008 draft to select none other than Justin Schultz who never signed with Anaheim, but decided to join the Oilers via free agency. The Ducks than took that 3rd round pick and shipped it off to the Islanders for former Oiler Marc-Andre Bergeron who infamously was apart of the Dwayne Roloson injury that very well cost the Oilers a 2007 Stanley Cup title. Bergeron ended up only playing in 9 games for the Ducks before being traded to Minnesota.
The Islanders used the 3rd round pick to select Kirill Petrov who has remained playing in the KHL for Ak Bars Kazan and hasn't signed in the NHL.
