Is that the starting bid? Because if so it's not that off. If the Oil are expecting to at least match his $ for this year (ie 5M) then he's not asking much of a raise and will probably come down depending on the terms.
I'd say 5.75M for a one year 11M for two 15 for three ...
at any rate, I don't think those #s are unworkable. If the Oilers ship him off this won't be the reason and it will be a mistake.
ps. check out my massive debate on Hemsky over at ON (comment #76):
I can definitely see some team giving him that money this summer but it cannot be the Oilers. If Hemsky was to get that value just think what Eberle, Hall and RNH would demand. Hemsky close to 6 leaves the others open to asking for 7 when 6-6.6 should be what their long term cap hits should come close to.
Sure I'd love to see Hemsky here next season but for less than 5. Ideally it would be for his current cap hit or lower.
@Captain. I'd go 4 at 20M without batting an eye. But I suspect the Oilers want something shorter. I'm guessing length is more important that $ (although the two are clearly related).
I agree, though what I actually suspect is that the Oilers don't want him at any term.
It's crazy though. As it stands Hemsky is going to be the second best forward available on the free agent market. He's going to get at least 5/25, possibly a lot more.
If I were the Oilers, I'd say one year deal @ $5M. He comes back and knocks it outta the park and the vault opens.
Sadly, there's going to be some GM out there willing to take the risk on a ridiculous multi-year offer for "what might be" and Hemsky's agent knows this.

15 for three - nice number - still tradeable at that number if it doesn't work out in a year

The minimum for Hemsky has to be around 20 for 4 or 25 for 5. I'd give it to him in a second.

If Hemmer makes it to July 1 without a contract I wouldn't be surprised to see him get 6 a year or more.

He's going to test the market. Book it.
