What's up bro? How have you been? I hope you’re starting to feel better. When last we spoke, you informed me that you were still a little sore but you were confident that you were over the injury troubles that have plagued you in the last couple of years. I, as well as the majority of the fan base in Edmonton have been waiting patiently and hoping for nothing more than that. For your sake, and for the sake of our beloved Edmonton Oilers. I remember telling you that you were going to score 90 points and that you need to sign long term. You smiled and said you would do your best. I left that day feeling more confident in the state of this team than I have in many years. Unfortunately, I’m writing you this letter because I have some bad news. Something is happening in Oilernation. Something very troubling.
I’ll explain.
Do you remember your first few seasons in the league, when you were the most talented player on the team? Those were difficult times, for you and us. I remember how you would set up shop on the power play and I’d watch in frustration as you’d serve up big sexy saucer passes to every open player on the team, but they’d swing and miss far too many times. I know that was frustrating for you too. But you kept on dangling and serving them up. We as a fan base kept wishing for management to hook you up with a sniper to convert those beauty passes. We were convinced that, if that was to happen, you’d be in the top ten in league scoring and the team would finally gain back some respect around the league.

I believe I got drunk at this point...
In the 10 years you’ve been in the league, there was exactly ONE year when management surrounded you with a decent team. We all remember 2006. I especially remember you putting the mighty Red Wings away with a pair of beauties in game 6 to start the march to the Cup finals. That ranks right up there with Todd Marchant’s OT goal in Dallas back in ’97 as one of the most beautiful memories for diehard fans. Unfortunately, we all know what happened to that team immediately after that heart breaking game 7 loss. Sorry to bring it up.
For the next five years, there was only one thing to cheer about as a fan of the Oilers... Well, until we actually gave up and started cheering for losses. You were that one thing. Ales, you were the only shining light on a team of plugs. You seemed to be capable of making magic happen at any moment. I remember after a particularly dazzling performance against the Avalanche, Joe Sakic called you: “The smoothest player in the league.” You were good enough to impress Joe Sakic! We as a fan base kept watching your every shift, fully expecting to have our minds blown at any moment by your brilliance. We’d watch you make the best defencemen in the world look silly on some nights.
But, there was NO ONE to help you. The team continued to struggle. Do you remember the day that management made a trade to get Dany Heatly? The fan base nearly blew its collective load!!! We knew we finally had the trigger man that you needed to carry this team back to greatness. But it wasn't meant to be... Heatly blocked the trade. He blocked it because everyone in the league has seen what you had to work with and he didn’t want to spend the next few years going through that.

No Heart
Ales, you never bitched when you had Toby Peterson trying to one-time your sweet passes on the PP. You kept your chin up when Pat Quinn decided to give you JFJ as a left winger. You just kept your nose to the grindstone and played like you were the size of Dustin Penner. Unfortunately, you are only a 6’0, 190lb man. Playing so big and going through all the traffic, trying to show Robert Nilsson, Patrick O’Sullivan and Joffrey Lupul how to play like men, while much appreciated by the fan base, has derailed your career over the last couple of seasons.

"Hey guys, you think we should do something about that?"
Ales, as you are more than aware, the result of the team’s struggles in the last few years (partly due to your unfortunate injuries) has been a few sweet draft picks. We can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! This team is going to be good again because of the young kids coming to help you. The best part is that you are still only 28 years old so you will surely be able to enjoy this ride, productively, in your prime for the next 4 or 5 years.

"What would Hemmer do?"
That's actually what I'm writing to you about... I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but, there is something I have to point out. There seems to be a bit of smear campaign against you. Some of the media guys and bloggers are telling fans that you have no heart. They are forgetting everything you’ve been through with this team. They forget that the reason you got those injuries was because you went to the areas of the ice that your team mates were too afraid to go to. They think because you’re only now just starting to get healthy, and therefore have struggled a little offensively this season, that perhaps you don’t want to be in Edmonton (forgetting that you signed a long term deal at a discounted rate to stay).

Just another day of not giving a fuck apparently
They think because of the new shiny kids being here that you are expendable. They think that since you get frustrated answering the media’s silly questions over and over again, that you are a poor sport. They think that since you usually don’t spend extra time on the ice after practice that you must not want to improve. I wonder what they think you are doing off the ice…. They forget that after so many injuries and in a contract year, you are a little tentative (understandably). These things take time. It’s not like the team is ready to win the cup yet anyway. But people can be a little impatient. Forgive them, Ales. It's been as hard on us emotionally to watch this team as it has been for you to play on it.

I'm fully convinced that since this management team has no idea how to build a winning team, they have decided that it is easier to keep getting good draft picks. It's a lot easier to keep their job when they tell the public that they are "rebuilding." It gives them carte blanche! Just sit back and let the draft picks come in and by the time they have enough star players, they will be able to say they are losing because they "couldn't sign them under the cap!" It's a simple formula: Keep losing, keep the fans in the seats by selling them hope and stay employed forever! It's hard to keep losing like that though when you already have great players. Players that actually outchance and outscore their opponents on a consistent basis. And how dare they look awesome doing it?!?!
That's why management leaks it out to the media when they plan on getting rid of a good player. With Sather and Lowe it was about control and money. With Tambellini it's about incompetency. The media then starts to try to convince the public that the player needs to go beacuse of some bullshit reasons. The problem here is that it’s working! There are actually fans buying into this bullshit. Some of them say things like, “He turns the puck over too much!” It's like they expect everything you do to result in a goal. You still create more chances than the other team! Nobody had more turnovers than the Great One himself. They are starting to think that it would make the team better if they traded you for some unknown player who they hope could someday turn into the player you already are.
They forget that this team has been pure shit (to the tune of back-to-back last place finishes) while you’ve been injured over the last 2 seasons. They forget that in the late 90’s and early 00’s with those blue collar teams, this team was an Ales Hemsky away from actually doing some damage. They forget how much they used to wish for an offensively gifted player like yourself to come along and help the anemic offense. They think that if they had a player who was happy to talk to the media and was more outgoing, that the Oilers would be a better team. They have no idea how a team works. They honestly believe that they would be better off with a team full of players like Ryan Jones! As much as I love Jones, he is never going to be a player that stirs the offensive drink… so to speak. He has a role. But he shouldn't be promoted above his level of competency! The Peter principal.
Routine
I’m writing this letter to you to let you know that, sometime in the next 7 weeks, you are going to be traded to a new team. This is all because management has no fucking clue how to build a team, and they think that they will be better off without you. You're too good to help the team keep losing! That is against management's modus operandi. They made what was once and ridiculous notion palatable by getting the media puppets to make you out to be a bad guy. I’m sorry that the fan base is so fickle, Ales. I wish so much that we lived in some remote, un-hockey loving city so that I wouldn’t have to worry about you being pushed out by so many morons. I wanted you to be an Oiler until you retired. I know you are going to light it up wherever you go and I wish nothing but the best for you in the future. You gave so much of yourself to this team, all the while entertaining the hell out of us.
Know that you will be booed by people when you come back and play against the Oilers. But please don’t take it to heart, Ales. It’s what the fans were told to do. Just know that there is a large faction of us out here who have always appreciated your gift… your genius. We will always remember you fondly and wish that it could have turned out differently. Like I said, don’t take it to heart. You’ll see that the same thing will happen to a few more guys as the seasons pass. They’ve been trying to do it do Glibert since he got here and Sam is probably next on the list. Imagine! He is one year older than Eberle and everyone is ready to throw him under the bus because he isn’t as good as YOU yet! All because they rushed him in as an 18 year old, back in 2007 so that you would have someone to play with. They needed to do that after they blew up the damn team so we had something to cheer for. Im afraid of what is going to happen when fans begin to notice that Hall doesn't score as much as Stamkos, Tavares or RNH.....
God Dammit, Dangles!!! I’m going to miss you so much. You can safely say that I am embarrassed to be associated with so many mindless fans of the Oilers. Here’s to a fantastic career, as you enter your prime. I hope you have fun and I hope you remember that there were so many of us that appreciated you.
Thanks for keeping the game sexy. #nohomo
Travis Dakin.
Man, I couldn't have put it better myself. Hemmer could have had some pretty impressive career totals so far, had he been on a better team, or even had another player near his level, consistently on his line. He is a special talent, and was unlucky enough to play on the wrong team at the wrong time. Not everyone can be Doug Weight with the media. Unfortunately he gets the business because he's not the best quote!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think it was possible, but reading this just made me despise Steve Tambellini even more.
ReplyDeleteBrings a tear to my eye. Eloquently put
ReplyDeleteVery well put sir.
ReplyDeleteWell that just pretty much tells it like it is, folks. I hope Oilers management was cc'd this. (And I hope the fuckers can read!)
ReplyDeleteWell said Travis.
ReplyDeleteThis post is far too good for me to leave some smart-assed response.
ReplyDeleteYou should drop by more often Travis.
... and God wept.
ReplyDeleteexactly!
ReplyDeleteWell put sir, well put.
ReplyDeleteAmen.
ReplyDeleteIt's far too long winded but I can't help it. Sorry but there are just some things on life that enrage me. Oiler fan's willingness to turn on players is one of them. And then everyone bitches and whines when guys don't want to come here. Idiots.
ReplyDeleteglad there is still Hemsky fans around, In away I hope he does get traded so he doesn't have to take this crap anymore( as much as it would suck for me). Great talent, one of my favorite Oiler players.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you guys haven't yet, please click on the embedded link to the Copper and Blue website. Derek Zona framed the issue far more eloquently and to the point than I ever could.
ReplyDeleteWell put.
ReplyDeleteI'll be a Hemsky fan no matter which team he plays on.
I remember when we had 6 quality defensemen, it wasn't that long ago. But when you trade solely for perceived need instead of for talent that's what happens.
It will probably happen again with Hemmer, we'll need a player like him within 2 years after trading him.
And if you guys haven't yet, please click on the embedded link to the Copper and Blue website. Derek Zona framed the issue far more eloquently and to the point than I ever could.
ReplyDeleteYou're full of it. This is beautiful. It's emotional, it's true. It's pretty much what I'd want to tell Hemsky if I could give him a message.
This is intelligent, impassioned, distilled fandom.
Thanks.
Somebody should get this letter to Ales.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if someone might take a hard stand for Hemsky. Like all highly-skilled players, he can be frustrating, but only because he tries things other players can't even dream about. As for heart, I can think of very few Oilers over the years who have been more willing to risk life and limb to get by a defender or who would dangle through the tough traffic zones looking to make a play. Got to keep him.
ReplyDeleteI love this letter. It's heartfelt and real. It stirs the blood and jerks the heartstrings. Hockey as life, life as hockey. F*ckin' A mac. I said to my wife the other day that if Ryan Smyth turned up on my doorstep and needed money and a place to sleep, I wouldn't even hesitate, because I love that guy. Travis obviously feels like that about Hemmer. Well done, Travis, I hope Ales and ST both get wind of this. You are a Fan. (I hope Ales stays. We need him.)
ReplyDeleteSomeone should tack that letter to the forehead of Matheson & Brownlee. Shills for Oilers management.
ReplyDeleteWhat a load of shit by a guy who is obviously infatuated with the Hemsky of the past. This is a game of RESULTS. I take nothing away from what Hemsky has done in that past but what does that get the team right now? Jack shit, thats what. Hemsky can potentially be a very good player again but hasn't played with anything resembling "heart" since he returned from injury. "To hurt to play"? Then he should not be in the line-up. Its my opinion that Hemsky feels the Oilers no longer consider him the "Top" player on the team and is disgruntled because he does not get "Top" ice time again. I WANT Hemsky to be a top level threat on the second line but that does not seem to be good enough for Hemsky(judging by his play and effort). I expect the Oiler to want to deal Hemsky and I expect Hemsky to be happy to go to a team where he will be considered a "Top" player, again...Sad, but thats the road Hemsky is going down...
ReplyDeleteSo trading him will make this team better, in your OPINION?
ReplyDeleteYou think that a player who comes back from an injury does so only when he is 100%?
You think that since he is having a slump for the first time in his career at the age 28 (immediately after 2 seasone ending surguries and in a contract year), that he is useless and washed up?
You think that because the team is currently coached by a man who has no idea how to use his work force that was given to him by a GM that has no idea what tools to buy, that Hemsky is to blame?
You honestly believe that a player would rather be the TOP guy (which he has been for 10 years) on a shitty team than be a key cog on a winning team?
You actually think that management and Hemsky aren't aware that he needs to show a track record of health and productiveness now in order to regain any value for him to be considered "top talent on a team" to recieve something of value in return?
You think that the Oilers could get someone for Hemsky that would have a more positive impact on the team now and in the future?
Did you notice that RNH isn't lighting it up lately? Is it time to trade that hearless plug?
Just clariying....
Hemsky will never be tops of the league in scoring. But do you not think that having him as your second line RW behind Eberle is a smart move? Seriously... Who the sweet ever loving fuck do you expect to replace Ales Hemksy when he is gone. If the return for Dustin Penner is any indication, we should either get a shiny new rock for OKC or perhaps we could fluke out with the second round pick he'd bring in. Or a slowly developing former first rounder who needs a new home may eventually turn into the player Hemsky already is.... 7 years from now.
ReplyDeletePlease stop showing the world that there are people around us that think like you. It's depressing.
Fuck. This article needs to be published in the sun and the journal.
ReplyDeleteIs it wrong that I'm actually looking forward to buying a Hemsky jersey with another logo on it? A nice Boston jersey with #83 and a 2012 Stanley cup champions patch on it.
ReplyDeleteWell put together, well said. I am pretty sure there are other players that can be traded before Hemsky. Whats that Hemsky for Souray another one of Tambellini's tragedy's
ReplyDeleteHemsky is indeed an awesome player, and i love him too. theres been some serious negative talk abt him from the media and i can understand y he would b frustrated. and the coach and some oiler fans r acting like frickin elementary kids who go running for the new shiny toy and stomp on the one theyd had for a gd eight-nine years. i know hemsky is unhappy, and u can tell by his face whenever they show him on the ice, but the fact that people r saying that he doesnt care for this team anymore is just ridciculus. like horcoff had said in an article in the paper b4, hemsky does care, and its unfair to him all the criticism hes been getting lately. k, i hav to say maybe hemskys game isnt as great as used to be, but hey hed been our most talented player for a long time and that talent just doesnt get wiped away and disappear from him. its still there, and hemsky will find it. he promised to play better and i know he'll keep his word. talent isnt wats been taken from hemsky, but something else. and thats his confidence. now y has his confidence level gone from the top of a mountain to the bottom? well lets look at the ice time hed been getting lately, the lines hes being put on and most of all, his powerplay time. had hemsky not always been our top playmaker? his amazing vision and playmaking is wat made our powerplay the past few years... y suddenly now, its only when theres like 49 secs left in the pp that the coach sends him out there. now oilers fans and esp hemsky fans we know that hes not the speedy magic guy, like ten secs and whoa an amazing goal no! he needs time and he takes time to look around for an open teammate. k, i know not all powerplays with him in it had been successful, but most hav. a not so long ago example would b taylor halls first hattrick.. 2 of 3 goals hemsky assisted. now how is it hemskys fault that hes not given enough time to do what he does best?? all in all, im getting a bad feeling that hemmers goin b traded, i rlly hope im wrong... but it could definitely happen. ive watched hemsky for a long time, and he is my favorite player. as much as i think hed b better off on a different team, where no one criticizes him and makes him feel bad, i still want him to stay.. bc hemskys been an oiler ever since he entered the nhl. hed been with us through the gd times in 2006, and also through the bad time, serving as our only hope and shining light on the ice. crossing my fingers that he can stay and will stay for his entire hockey career, bc in my eye, hemsky belongs on this team more than anyone, bc hes a true edmonton oiler
ReplyDelete^ There's probably some good stuff buried in there, but I gave up three lines in.
ReplyDeleteTerrific post Mr Dakin,
ReplyDeleteWhile your affection for Ales is surely warranted (due to his previous levels of production) fans of The Oilers, including yourself, must keep in mind that while (at times) Ales' abilities appear incommensurable, the fact of the matter is that The Oilers require a player whom not only displays a level of creativity unparalleled since He who shall not be named, but a single player who can carry The Entire Team toward The Celestial City on their very backs.
I consider your heartfelt and impassioned missive to be misguided. One should open his heart to receive his true Savior.
Yours,
K. L., DEA.
I could not have put it any better bro. I cried while reading this. He has always been my favourite player since he started and the fans and media that hate on him and even my friends that hate on them, they fuckin disgust me. I have punched many people in the face, even a teacher because of it. I do not want him to get traded and I ball my eyes out if he does. Best Oiler ever, he has the heart like no other. He is obviously disappointed in himself because he is slumping but he will find his game. He is trying his best and he is still the best oiler on the team and is only going to get better.
ReplyDeleteManagement, if you're reading, PLEASE DON'T TRADE ALES HEMSKY
ReplyDeletepftt! well i cant apologize that i cant relate to a word of this crap cause i've been cursin the Turd since his first shift. but i can relate to the embarassment you feel for me only i am ashamed to breathe the same air as you. No doubt you've polished this right up and ales will surely print it out and shove it up his Cheka-slovakian @ss while gettin off on cam to his underage love boy back home. oh and i'm sure he'll have a sweet session for you too.
ReplyDelete"best Oiler ever"... what a Loser
Wow, Anonymous, you truly are a loser. It's people like you that give douche bag Canuck fans ammunition. Show some class.
ReplyDeleteMan , such a great post.
ReplyDeleteI wish i had the chance to meet hemsky , favorite player since he joined the team.
I wish people understood, that its one bad season.
exactly... if u cnt judge a player bc of one bad game, then u still cant for one bad season..... and heh trade hemsky?? aha, wat if this happens 2 b his worst season and nxt season turns out 2 b the best?! hemsky had said himself b4 that he knows hes not doin super gd now, but he promised hed hav better seasons than this..also keep in mind how many seasons has he played for oilers?? hes always been loyal 2 us, so now he has a ONE bad season and suddenly everyone is turning on him...yea ok go ahead and trade him bc of his poor performance this season, then he gets his breakout season on another team and the oilers will regret it... there are many players i can name that hav refused to come to edmonton 2 play... this one wants to stay, and hes a gd one, with so much more hockey to play... keep hemsky!!
